Reading

Five Minute Reading Challenge - 
Visualize Reading: "Raindrops"

Students are read a descriptive paragraph by the instructor. Students are to listen to the reading, think about the details, and then draw a picture of what they heard. Activity increases students listening, comprehension, and visualization skills. 

Class Reading

Students selected a new book to read in class this week. Class read book aloud and discussed in class together.

    Reading and Writing Class Overview

    Objective

    Students will learn skills and tools to strengthen their writing and reading abilities. Class focus is on reading phonics, strategies, fluency, comprehension, vocabulary development  writing process, text, conventions, handwriting, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and research.

    Materials Needed
    • 3-ring binder, or folder with brads, and pockets
    • Pencils
    • Dividers with folders and tabs
    • Sheet protectors
    • Book of students choosing to bring to each class 
    Class Breakdown

    Vocabulary

    Students assigned 10 new vocabulary words each class. Vocabulary words are incorporated new into the student’s reading and writing lessons to help strengthen context, identification, spelling, meaning, and pronunciation skills. Students work on activities like word review, the 5 Minute Writing Challenge, and spelling challenges to enhance their vocabulary and spelling skills.
    Reading

    Students select from a variety of short stories and books to read aloud during class, or can select to bring their own book (BYOB). Class focuses on reading comprehension, pronunciation, and frequency. Student will answer questions from worksheets about the material they read in class to strengthen comprehension skills.

    Writing

    Students write short essay, utilizing beginning, middle, and end formation, summarizing the story they've read in class. Writing focus on spelling, punctuation, spacing, and form. Student must use vocabulary words learned in class in their writing. Graphic organizers, writing prompts, and language arts worksheets utilized to strengthen students writing skills.

    "BYOB - Bring Your Own Book"

    In our class reading time, students bring their own books to dive into! Students discuss their reading and are given a comprehension worksheet to complete over their reading. 

    For students who did not bring a book to class, they chose from the class library, or the Central Texas Library Selection and Epic.
